The Journal Star today had an interesting article with two questions: What was the 6th planet discovered and what was the worst act of terrorism in history? I won't ruin it for you but the first comment is a classic Nebraskan sentiment. Here is my response to Randy, that says because this article is written by an UNL faculty member that his kids will never go there.
"The only reason you are upset, Randy, is because history is written by the victors and people here can't deal with history being written from the perspective of others. Definition of terrorism from the League of Nations: "All criminal acts directed against a State and intended or calculated to create a state of terror in the minds of particular persons or a group of persons or the general public." The extremists that bombed the World Trade Center thought they were at war as well, and that justified what they did, and Americans call it 'terrorism'. How is that any different from what we did in Japan? Americans needs to get over its massive superiority complex and realize that there are 5.5 billion other people that they will have to share the planet with sooner or later. You can hide your kids from this all you like, but it will just help perpetuate the cycle of 'America, A-OK' no matter what the country does. Education is meant to test and expand one's beliefs, not reinforce them in the face of absurdity. That is called ignorance."

Light at the end of the tunnel
SO I signed up for two more classes this term, on into May, but I finished my requirements to graduate last term. Im looking at a B+ in Geology and a B in Decision Support Systems Programming from last term-current cumulative GPA is a 3.55. Im taking two classes for Art this term-one called "Art and Controversy" which will deal with questions like "What is art?", "Who is it for?", "What is Obscene or Offensive?" and other things like that. We'll look at performance, visual, and auditory art, pornography, photographs, and I think some written word stuff. Im pretty psyched! My other class is a 1 week seminar on Art and Protest in times of war and how art and propaganda influence people.
If I can get A's in those classes im looking at a solid 3.5 gpa when I graduate.
